How do I log in via SFTP with FileZilla?

FileZilla is a free program that you use to log in to your hosting account via FTP. This way you easily manage all files within your hosting account. You can also use SFTP to log in. This is a connection where you use your SSH credentials to login to your webspace while using a FTP client. One of the advantages is that you don't have the FTP file limit of 10.000 files.

In this article we’ll explain in 2 ways how you can use SFTP to connect to your webspace using FileZilla.

Important

The files for your primary domain always go into the public_html folder.

Steps SFTP using the Normal connection type

Step 1. Download FileZilla

Step 2. Connect with FileZilla

  • Start FileZilla.

  • Click the menu-item File.

  • Click Site Manager.

  • Click New Site.

Use Sitemanager to set up SFTP

  • Give your connection a name.

  • You can now enter the following information:

    • Host: Enter your domain name if your domain name is already active, or enter the server address. The server address for normal hosting packages is 'wwwXX.totaalholding.nl' and premium hosting packages 'premiumXX.totaalholding.nl'. Steps SFTP through an authorized_keys file

Step 1. Download FileZilla

  • Go to the FileZilla website.
  • Click Download FileZilla Client.
  • Install FIleZilla.

Step 2. Create a authorized_keys file on your hosting account

First things first! We need to make sure your public key is added to your hosting account. To do this, you need to create an authorized_keys file on your hosting account. This can be easily done through the File Manager option in cPanel. Create the file in your .ssh folder (located in the root of your webspace) and insert the contents of your public key into the file. After you’ve done that, you can proceed with step 3.

Step 3. Connect with FileZilla

  • Start FileZilla.
  • Click the menu-item File.
  • Click Site Manager.
  • Click New Site.

Use Sitemanager to set up SFTP

  • You can now enter the following information:
